Could Sleep Apnea Be Men’s Not So Silent Killer?

Most people go to sleep, breathing peacefully, but for others snoring is a nightly event. It can also be a sign of Sleep Apnea, a potentially life threatening disease if left untreated.

Sleep Apnea involves repeated arousals from sleep, though not to full awakening, because breathing has stopped. Many people don’t even realize they stop breathing hundreds of times throughout the night. This may be because the airway has become obstructed, either from the soft palate, or the tongue area. The abnormal positioning of those areas, may lead to predisposing the airway to collapse.

It’s estimated that over 18 million Americans suffer from Sleep Apnea, and the vast majority of them are men. One out of four males have Sleep Apnea, 80% of those cases go undiagnosed.

Left untreated, it could cause irregular heartbeat, memory problems, headache, impotency, weight gain, high blood pressure, heart attack, or stroke.

Snoring is almost always associated with Obstructive Sleep Apnea. Dr. Pankaj Singh at Arch Dental Associates and Le Visage Cosmetic and Implant Dentistry treats the conditions that lead to snoring. Dentistry is an integral part of sleep medicine. With education and advanced technology, he can provide an alternative or adjunct to surgery.
